⚠ Safety notice: If you experience increased tinnitus, discomfort, or any worsening during a session — stop immediately and rest. Never use these tools at high volume. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before starting any treatment for tinnitus.
WHAT IS THE TINNITUS LAB?
The Lab is a set of sound-based tools drawn from peer-reviewed tinnitus research. Some are well-established (noise masking); others are emerging and experimental (notched audio therapy, residual inhibition). None are a cure. All are safe to use with headphones at moderate volume.
Frequency Match
Helps you find the approximate pitch of your tinnitus. Used to personalize notched therapy and your AI Coach profile. — Diagnostic tool.
Noise Masking
White, pink, and brown noise partially mask tinnitus during sessions. Well-established for temporary relief. — Widely used for temporary symptom relief.
Notched Audio
Noise with a frequency gap at your tinnitus pitch. Based on Okamoto et al. (2010) — daily use over weeks showed measurable reduction in some patients. — Experimental. Results vary.
RI Test
Residual Inhibition — after masking noise stops, some people experience a brief quieting of tinnitus. Studied since the 1970s (Terry et al., 1983). A positive response may suggest sound therapy will work well for you. — Diagnostic/experimental.
Spectral Ripple
Multiple frequency bands near your tinnitus pitch change independently — the brain can't lock onto stable patterns. Based on Hearing Research (2025) — significant loudness reduction after 6 weeks, persisting 3+ weeks after stopping. — Emerging. Promising 2025 research.
CR Neuromodulation
Four tones dance above and below your tinnitus frequency in a randomized sequence with pauses. Designed to desynchronize the overactive neural clusters driving tinnitus. Based on Tass et al. (2012) — Acoustic Coordinated Reset Neuromodulation. — Experimental. Requires frequency match.
This is not a medical device. Use headphones. Keep volume comfortable — loud sound can worsen tinnitus. See our Terms of Use for full details.

NOTCHED AUDIO THERAPY
Frequency match required. You haven't matched your tinnitus frequency yet — notched therapy needs this to work.
→ Go to Frequency Match first
Broadband noise with a gap cut around your tinnitus frequency. Depriving the auditory cortex of input at that pitch causes it to gradually reduce hyperactivity there. Based on Okamoto et al. (2010) — daily sessions over 12 months showed measurable cortical reorganization and loudness reduction in noise-induced cases.
PROTOCOL
30–60 min/day · Use headphones · Keep volume comfortable
Results typically emerge after 4–12 weeks of consistent use.
35
Should be clearly audible but not loud. Never above comfortable listening level.

This test plays 60 seconds of broadband noise, then stops. After it ends, notice whether your tinnitus changed. A brief quieting after the sound stops = residual inhibition (RI) — a promising indicator that sound therapy will work for you.
15
Keep volume low — loud masking noise can temporarily worsen tinnitus. Start at 30 or below.

SPECTRAL RIPPLE THERAPY
Multiple frequency bands near your tinnitus pitch change independently and unpredictably — the brain cannot lock onto any stable spectral pattern. Based on Hearing Research (2025) — significant tinnitus loudness reduction after 6 weeks, persisting 3+ weeks after stopping therapy.

ACOUSTIC CR NEUROMODULATION
Frequency match required. CR Neuromodulation needs your tinnitus pitch to calculate the 4 tones.
→ Go to Frequency Match first
Four precisely tuned tones play in a randomized sequence above and below your tinnitus frequency, each followed by a brief pause. Unlike continuous sound therapy, this pulsed pattern is designed to desynchronize the overactive neural clusters driving your tinnitus — gradually reducing the signal that your brain reinforces. Based on Tass et al. (2012).
PROTOCOL
4–6 short sessions/day · 3–4 min each · Use headphones · Tones barely audible

Tones should be just audible — not loud. Start low.
